Katherine Wolf Progress: Seventh Session with Risa

Thinking Up!

We started on the barre doing lunges. Katherine has a tendency to look down at the floor while walking and exercising. I instructed her to lift her head up, and bring her gaze to the front. I had her constantly thinking of lengthening her spine beyond the top of her head while performing her lunges, and moving forward instead of downward. Katherine would like to use her walker less and less, so eventually she will not use it at all. I have made it my intention as well! In order to achieve that she will have to strengthen her right side and improve her balance, and make her two sides work together as much as possible. I then had Katherine hold onto the barre full face again with head held high, and eyes
gazing upward. Then I had her gently place her hands on the barre while lifting her right foot off the floor about 45 degrees, her left leg supporting her. I instructed Katherine to activate all her muscles and to specifically notice the feeling she experienced on her strong leg.

Katherine then switched balancing on her weak right side (or fun side as we prefer to call it). She then focused her attention on the feeling of the stronger leg
supporting her. Voila! It worked, although not for long. Her image in her mind of how it was suppose to feel was stronger than her weak muscles.

This definitely is the way we are going to continue to work until eventually the neurons in Katherine’s mind and the way she uses her muscles become as one
permanently.

At home I told her to keep her head lifted and visualize the feeling of her stronger side in everything she does. One day it will become a natural part of her everyday routine.

Katherine Wolf is an amazing person with a strong will and a positive attitude toward life. Her determination in getting better and returning to the physical ability that she was in prior to her unfortunate stroke plus the Pilates workout are going to be a great pair in her ultimate goal.

I pray for her complete recovery, which I am very positive about.

Teacher Training 2012

We’ve entered our last month of this teacher training session! We are so proud of how far everyone has come. This month, Risa answers more of your Comprehensive Teacher Training questions:

Q. How many levels are offered in the SMP Comprehensive Teacher Training?

A. There is not a rule that states how to divide the course. The director can put in how ever many of
levels he or she wants. I choose to divide my course into three levels that I know the teacher will most effectively and commonly teach. I leave more advanced work for level 4 and 5 for continuing education. My goal is to have the teacher prepared for the most common type of client and to serve them best.

Our next teacher training starts in September 21, 2012. Sign up now for early bird special! All of our graduates are gainfully employed fans.

Katherine’s Journey

My first Pilates session with Katherine Wolf was on February 10. I was excited to meet her! She arrived at my studio with her dear friend, Susan, who was visiting from their home town in Georgia. I was impressed with Katherine’s enthusiasm, positive energy, and excitement to start working with Pilates, and continuing her rehabilitation. She was open and responsive to do and try whatever I asked of her. She had tried Pilates only once, following her surgery in Casa Colina, the rehab facility where she and her husband, Jay, lived for more than a year. Unfortunately, Katherine remembered getting sick each time she had to move the position of her body. So that idea was quickly dropped!

I decided to start her at the barre, which she held onto as we went through the centering principle, corrected her posture and got her aligned. As Katherine’s right
side was most affected by her stroke, her imbalance is acute. The difference between her right and left side is more apparent than most, but I know that as soon as we get the center, or core, stronger, that imbalance should improve. Since she (and I) have no hearing or balance nerve on our right side, I quickly learned to place myself in a strategic position for her greatest benefit and my best teaching skills! I explained the center to her, and she picked it up right away, feeling and enjoying the sense of control it gave her over her movements.

I then had her lie on the Cadillac, and I stretched her out and helped her relax. Katherine is naturally flexible, but we needed to stabilize her back and hips to help
to elongate and align her lower body. Finally, I put her on the reformer. Again, because of her extremely weak right side, her right leg kept shaking, and it felt like it was coming off! As we brought her focus continually back to the center, the shaking decreased and her movement became more precise. We went through many of the beginning exercises on the reformer. Katherine was elated and tired at the same time. But we both finished the session with a feeling of pure joy, and looked forward to our next session.

Teacher Training 2012

Our teacher training program kicked off on February 24, and we’re having a blast! This month, Risa answers more of your questions:

Q. Why did you start SMP Comprehensive Teacher Training?
A. My company was fast expanding and I needed new teachers, I was lucky to start with a couple of teachers who had been with me a long time. As the studio grew, I had to hire people I didn’t really know and who were not attuned to my teaching methods. I knew the only way to get the teachers I knew and trusted well was to train in my own way with what I knew and practiced for decades. Also, I don’t have children, so this was my legacy and desire to turn good teachers of Pilates onto the world!

Q. What do you love about training future teachers?
A. I love teaching teachers because they are so dedicated to the craft and have to commit whole- heartedly or else they won’t succeed. I love to see them grow into loving and caring teachers. I choose students who have an affinity for helping others; not just an interest in making money and showing off their bodies, My study is a giving of the spirit and teachers who give 100% from the heart. That is the only true way to show real love and keep clients coming back for more.

A wise man once said to me, “Risa everyone wants to be adopted.” I believe we all want to be taken care of. I don’t mean in a co-dependent manner, but a mutually nurturing environment.

In April, 2008, Katherine Wolf, age 26, had a massive brainstem stroke. She was not expected to live or recover. In the time since the AVM rupture (the congenital condition that caused her stroke), she has had to re-learn to eat, to speak, and to walk.
Katherine had just placed her 6-month-old son down for a nap when she fell to the floor. All feeling left her body, and she began to shake uncontrollably. Thankfully, her husband, Jay, was at home and was able to rush her to a hospital. If not, she would have surely succumbed to the stroke. She spent 40 days in ICU and a total of one year and 7 months in the hospital before moving to her home in Culver City.
Upon learning of Katherine’s condition, I became immediately inspired with her positive attitude toward her situation and wanted to help as best I could. Since my acoustic neuroma surgery of 6 years ago (when, if you recall, I had to re-learn to walk and talk), I have become increasingly aware and interested in head trauma and how Pilates can help in the healing process, as it did with me. Although I feel I had a sneeze compared to Katherine, it has become my mission to assist as best I can through my knowledge and 35 years in Pilates movement.
I will be chronicling Katherine’s progress with me during these next few newsletters as we work once or more a week at my studio in Westwood.
In the three visits with Katherine so far, she has been able to master the idea of the body center, from which all movement flows, She is able to walk (with the help of a walker for now) with more control from her center. She is a delight to work with. Her infectious spirit, loving presence, and excitement for the work of Pilates on her body inspires me like none other.
Follow us as we continue to rehabilitate Katherine and see how this incredible woman defies all odds, makes lemonade out of lemons, and lets me help her help herself.
Sincerely,

STUDIO NEWS

Teacher Training 2012

It’s that time of year! Our teacher training program kicked off on February 24. Making career changes can be a scary process, particularly to an entirely new profession like Pilates. To ease the transition for our new group of students and pique the curiosity of any future instructors out there, Risa answered a few of your questions:

Q. Will I find employment: as a Pilates Instructor?
A. Yes, there are many niches for a good Pilates instructor. This is not a fad, but a lifelong lifestyle. There are always studios looking for good Pilates instructors – but good you must be. At the Sheppard Method, instructors develop their own intuition to use with a strong classical foundation as well as modern techniques.

Many graduates have entered the medical profession, some have combined with acupuncture or other forms of natural medicine, while others have gone on to open their own studios and are flourishing. Many work out of their home studios with a private clientele. There is room for creativity and endless possibilities.

Q. Am I too old to learn a new profession?
A. Absolutely not! We have had many graduates in their 60s receive their comprehensive teacher training and are busy teaching now. The Baby Boomer Generation actually loves it when someone their own age teaches them. To many of them, there is nothing more intimidating than an instructor in his/her young 20s.

Q. How long will it take until I complete comprehensive teacher training and begin teaching?
A. It can take about 7 months with a full-time commitment to the comprehensive teacher training or up to a year.  It depends on the individual’s timetable. However, with Risa’s approval, some instructors in the past have begun taking clients at a discounted student rate before completing their full comprehensive teacher training.

Memories of My Early Days with Ron Fletcher

A lot has been written lately about the late, great, Pilates elder Ron Fletcher. I can’t add much else to the eulogies given him by those who knew him. He was an innovator, a charismatic man, a genius, and an inspiration to all. But those of us who were lucky to know and work with him in his heyday in Beverly Hills, have some fun stories to tell.

It was the early 1970′s: A time before AIDS, a time before cell phones, before computers, a time before 9/11. I was the “kid” on the block. Just out of UCLA, I discovered the “Ron Fletcher School of Body Contrology” through a magazine article and I fell in love with the work. I did not like aerobics, but I loved to move. Ron was a mover. I loved his classes, his technique, and his philosophy.

Although I was not a dancer, I felt like one without being one. Ron was a modern dancer. He incorporated that technique into his studio and classes. Floor classes were his domain, and it became mine as well. The reformer seemed too static, too rigid. Ron’s floor classes were more flowing, more intuitive. I loved it – and still do to this day.

We had every celebrity of the 70′s you could imagine: Katharine Ross, Ali MacGraw, Ann Margaret, Barbara Streisand, you name it. We had big producers and directors as well. Heck, we were charging $75 a private session back then! We were above Aida Grey on Rodeo and Wilshire, across the street from the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

Many of our clients stayed there. Many of our clients’ husbands had mistresses there (but of course we would never tell). I quickly discovered that being a movie
star did not mean living a life without problems or without having body issues. Diane, Carol, Mike and myself (all his staff) became close. We made sure the other’s clients were well taken care of. We loved Ron, we loved the work, but I was always a bit in awe of him.

When he left to move back to Texas, I thought we would never hear from him again. We all went our separate ways; I began teaching privately in homes, the others
opened a studio. But I always give Ron credit for starting me on my Pilates career journey. When I opened my West LA studio in 2003, Ron contacted me. He wanted
me to open a Ron Fletcher Studio, but I had been on my own for 25 years already and I couldn’t afford to shut down my studio and study with him in Tucson.

I am grateful I started with Ron 35 years ago. He will never know, but he gave a 22-year old young girl a great life and “eye popping” experiences. One day, however,
I will write a book entitled “I’ll never exercise this town again!” Wait for its juicy debut!

Sincerely,

Risa Sheppard

A Thanksgiving Message from Risa Sheppard

Everybody talks about giving thanks around this time of year. Giving thanks is a big deal in spiritual work, for to “give thanks” is the single most loving and healing thing we can do as human beings. I really want to pause and give thanks, as I acknowledge every person in my life that has contributed to my life journey and inspired me to move beyond the limits of my abilities.

First, I thank all of my clients, several of whom have become my family, and for which I have spent most of my waking moments helping them help themselves. You have rewarded me with moments that can never be replicated. I thank each and every one of you, no matter how long we have been apart or where your life has sent you. You have inspired me, motivated me, and made me constantly strive to become a better person.  My work is not about me. It’s about you.

Second, I am thankful of my wonderful staff of teachers and assistants. You have truly helped me reach my clients through your compassion, loyalty, and dedication to the art of Pilates, as well as to helping others. I so appreciate your love and support.

I wish you a happy holiday season and a joyful Thanksgiving. Let us show our gratitude for all the good we have in our lives.

Sincerely,
